Carle Place is a hamlet and census-designated place in Nassau County, New York. The community is served by the Carle Place School District. The town is named after the Carle House, a 32-room built by Silas Carle in Westbury in the 19th Century. The house was commonly called Carle’s Place, and the surrounding area adopted the name later on. Toward the beginning of World War II, developer William Levitt built 600 low-cost homes on 19 acres of land, and the population of Carle Place had grown by 500 percent by the end of the war. The neighborhood stood as a prototype for Levitt’s next project and what was to become the largest village in New York State, Levittown.
