Franklin Square is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Hempstead, in Nassau County, New York. The community is served by the Valley Stream Central High School District. The community was founded in 1870 by Leon McCullough Jr. A wave of German immigrants settled in the area in the 1870s. In the period between the World Wars, Franklin Square became one of the nation’s fastest growing communities, and by the 1950s residential neighborhood completely replaced farms in the area.
