Glen Cove is one of two cities in Nassau County, New York. It is located on the North Shore of Long Island, with it’s northern boundary formed by the Long Island Sound, and surrounded on the other three sides by the Town of Oyster Bay. The city is served by the Glen Cove City School District. The original inhabitants of the area was the Matenicock tribe of the Lenape (Delaware) nation of Native Americans. By 1668, the area was used as an English port, and in May of that year Joseph Carpenter of Rhode Island purchased 2,000 acres of land from the Matenicock. Carpenter partnered with four other men to form the settlement “Musketa Cove.” In the mid-1800’s steamboat service was provided between Musketa Cove and New York City, making it a popular place for city travellers. In 1834, residents voted to change the name of the village to Glen Cove, since the term musketa had a negative association with mosquitos. The Long Island Railroad was extended to Glen Cove in 1867. As the community gained affluence, wealthy New Yorkers, such as F.W. Woolworth and J.P. Morgan established luxurious estates on the area’s rolling hills. Today, part of the Moran estate is now open to the public as Morgan Park and Beach. The Post Office and the Justice Court Building were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
