Great Neck is a village on the North Shore of Long Island in the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, New York. The community is served by the Great Neck School District. The original inhabitants of Great Neck were Mattinecock tribe, and European settlers arrived in the late 17th Century. Originally called Madnan’s Neck, the area was renamed when it was divided into Great Neck and Little Neck. Great neck was the head of the New York and Flushing Railroad and the easy access to the city help the community transform from a farming village into a growing suburb. Follow World War II a large Ashkenazi Jewish community began to develop as these people moved out of the larger cities into the suburb. Since then, the community has become so diverse, but the structures set in place by the active religious community still have a major impact today.
