Hempstead is a village in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York. The village is served by the Hempstead School District. The land that now encompasses the Towns of Hempstead and North Hempstead was purchased from Merrick, Massapequa, Matinecock and Rekowake tribes in 1643 by John Carman and Robert Fordham. The settlement was named after Carman’s birthplace in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England. Throughout the 19th Century, Hempstead was an important trading community on Long Island and in 1853 it became the first self-governing incorporated village. Today, Hempstead is the most populous village in the state of New York.
