Lawrence is a village on the South Shore of Long Island in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York. The village is served by the Lawrence Public Schools. Old Lawrence, or Back Lawrence, as the original section of the community is known today, once had several large mansions and plantations on it that date back as far as the American Revolution. From the mid to late 1800’s, the area was a popular summer retreat for wealthy New Yorkers, until a hurricane destroyed a beachfront hotel and altered the coastline.
