Merrick is a hamlet and census-designated place on the South Shore of Long Island in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York. The community is served by the Merrick and North Merrick School Districts. The community is named for the Meroke, a tribe of Iroquois, who originally lived in the area. Sachem Tackapousha signed a treaty with English Puritans in 1643, and the area became a bustling port where large ships could dock along what is now Merrick Road. The expansion of the South Shore Railroad attracted commercial enterprises to the area in the 1880s, and a large population boomed occurred after World War II.
