New Hyde Park is an area that includes the Incorporated Village of New Hyde Park and some unincorporated surrounding areas in both Nassau and Queens Counties, in the Towns of Hempstead and North Hempstead. The community is served by the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park School District, Sewanhaka Central High School District, Elmont School District and Great Neck School District, among others. The area of New Hyde Park was included in a royal grant given to Governor Thomas Dongan in 1683 by the King of England. Dongan eventually fled to Ireland following the downfall of King James I, and the land was sold to the Secretary of the Provence of New York, George Clark. Clark named the area Hyde Park after his wife, Ann Hyde. The name of the community was changed in 1871 when the Post Office was built because there was another Hyde Park upstate.
