A village within the Town of Huntington, Northport is located along the North Shore of Long Island. Originally occupied by the Matinecock tribe, the town was sold to a group of Englishmen by Chief Asharoken, after whom a strip of beach land is still named. The European settlers first called their purchase Great Cow Harbor for its use as grazing land and part in the cattle trade of the era (a name which is still invoked during a yearly celebration of the town and its history). It was later officially dubbed Red Hook- though that title was never particularly popular in use- before being recognized by its current moniker. Today, Northport Village includes a number of boutiques, small shops, fine restaurants, and old fashioned barbershops. In addition to its respected local businesses, the town has also acquired the harbor on which much of its commerce was originally founded and made a park of the surrounding land. The small dock and independent shops give Northport’s Main Street a sort of Old World charm which has made it a popular destination among both locals and out of towners. Notable residents of the town include famed writer Jack Kerouac, New York Jet Greg Buttle, NHL player Darius Kasparaitis, Knicks assistant coach Phil Weber Jr, actress Edie Falco, and actor Robert Burke.
