Point Lookout is a hamlet and census-designated place, located on the east end of Long Beach Island, on the South Shore of Long Island in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York. The community is served by the Long Beach School District. The Merrick people were the first inhabitants of the area. Dutch settlers arrived in the area in the 1640’s, and English settlers joined them about twenty years later. Homes were built in the area in the early 1900’s, intended to be summer cottages. In the 1950’s, these homes were converted to year-round, permanent residences.
