Valley Stream is a village in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York. The community is served by the Hewlett-Woodmere and the Valley Stream School Districts. The land now called Valley Stream was purchased by the Dutch East India Company in 1640 from the Rockaway peoples, but the area remained largely unpopulated for the next two centuries. One of the earliest residents, Robert Pagan, immigrated to the area from Scotland in the 1830’s, and petitioned the U.S. Postal Service to authorize a post office near the community. Before this could happen, a name had to be chosen for the area. Pagan chose the name Valley Stream based on the area’s topography. The addition of Merrick Road in 1853 and the expansion of the South Shore Railroad in 1869 helped promote the growth of commercial industry in the region. Gibson Station on the Long Island Railroad in Valley Stream is named for William R. Gibson, a real estate developer who built family homes on several streets in the area.
